The Institute for European Cultural History (IEK for short), founded in 1990, is a central academic institution of the University of Augsburg.
Its mission is to promote and conduct interdisciplinary research into European cultural history. On the one hand, the focus is on the rich historical sources in the libraries and archives in Augsburg and Swabia, but on the other hand, the Institute is also firmly committed to a European perspective. It is therefore always about the relationship between the local and the global, about embedding regional developments in larger European or even global contexts.?This includes the systematic support and promotion of relevant research projects, the provision of research infrastructure, and the creation of a platform for exchange and communication among researchers committed to the IEK’s goals. In addition, the Institute is tasked with communicating the findings obtained through these efforts to both the academic and general public.
?
The IEK consists of its members. All members of the University of Augsburg who hold a doctorate and conduct independent research in the field of European cultural history can become members. The IEK is managed by a board of directors. It also has a team of staff members who conduct their own academic research, supervise publications and projects at the institute, and coordinate and organize the activities of the IEK. A small institute library is also available.
