Lecture on intramembrane proteases at Ringberg Castle

The President of the Max Planck Society, Prof. Dr. Patrick Cramer, hosted an event at Ringberg Castle in early May to mark the 25th anniversary of his laboratory. Dr. Sabine H?ppner, group leader in our Biochemistry Department, played a dual role at this event: as an alumna active in science, she gave a lecture on her current research focus on intramembrane proteolysis at the University of Augsburg and also looked back on the very first days and months of the Cramer Lab, when she was working on her PhD thesis under Patrick Cramer.

Biochemistry PhD Students receive Awards

We are pleased to share that two PhD students from our lab participated successfully in the 13th IPS Meeting in Búzios, Brazil. Their contributions were recognized with awards at the meeting, reflecting the quality of their work and the strong scientific output of our lab. Kinda Sharrouf received a poster award, and Johannes Bartmann was granted a travel award to support his participation. We warmly congratulate both of them on this great achievement. IPS Meetings are a conference series of the International Proteolysis Society focused on the latest advances in proteolysis research.

Doctorate successfully completed

Congratulations! Dr. rer. nat. Konxhe Kulaj has successfully defended her doctoral thesis "Adipocyte-derived Extracellular Vesicles in Metabolic Disease: Regulators of Insulin Secretion with Diagnostic Potential". Her research demonstrated that extracellular vesicles can enhance insulin secretion by delivering specific proteins to pancreatic beta cells. Additionally, her findings emphasize the promising role of these vesicles as diagnostic tools for metabolic diseases.

Publication Award of the Faculty of Medicine

We are delighted to receive the 2023 Publication Award of the Faculty of Medicine! Our publication "Adipocyte-derived extracellular vesicles increase insulin secretion through transport of insulinotropic protein cargo" was published in Nature Communications in February 2023 and investigates the influence of extracellular vesicles from adipose tissue on pancreatic insulin secretion.

Invitation for a plenary talk at the MOVE international EV conference

Fantastic news! Our dedicated PhD student, Konxhe Kulaj, has been selected by the MOVE (MObility for Vesicles research in Europe) Consortium to give a plenary talk at their annual conference in Malaga. This presents a great opportunity for her to discuss her research with international experts in the field of extracellular vesicles.

Doctoral examination successfully passed

Hats off to Dr. rer. nat. Michaela Bauer for the successful defense of her doctoral thesis "The Role of Extracellular Vesicles in Metabolic Diseases." Her research centered on the characterisation of extracellular vesicles from adipocytes, studying their changes in obesity, and understanding their impact on metabolically active cells, especially pancreatic islet cells.
