The Faculty of Philology and History at the University of Augsburg is seeking to fill the following position at the Chair of Image Processing and Visualization in the Digital Humanities as soon as possible:

Post-doctoral Research Assistant (m/f/d)

This is a full-time position with a fixed-term contract of six years. The position is suitable for part-time employment, provided that job sharing ensures that the full-time workload is covered. Remuneration is based on pay scale 13 TV-L, provided that the personal and collective labour agreement requirements are met.

The chair group, newly established with funding from the Bavarian High-Tech Agenda, is dedicated to the image-based recording and analysis of cultural heritage in the broadest sense. It is affiliated with both History of Arts and Cultures and Digital Humanities and also works closely with Environmental Sciences and Computer Science. In this interdisciplinary setting, our research focuses on imaging techniques as well as computer-aided methods of image processing and visualisation and image-based modelling. This results in a versatile, dynamic and internationally networked working environment.

The position to be filled is particularly suitable for establishing your own profile in teaching and research in the postdoctoral career phase.

Your tasks:

  • Teaching and research on image-based recording, visualisation, 3D modelling and analysis of material cultural heritage, particularly at the artefact to monument/city scale
  • Planning and organising courses and examinations in the degree programmes History of Arts and Cultures (existing) and Digital Humanities (planned)
  • Teaching five contact hours per week per semester in the above-mentioned subjects, including supervision of student internships and theses
  • Taking on administrative tasks in programme coordination, student counselling and academic self-government in accordance with the Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act (BayHIG)
  • Participation in research projects of the chair as well as design and implementation of own research projects, including acquisition of external funding
  • Writing of high-quality scientific papers suitable for publication in renowned journals and for presentation at national and international conferences
  • Management of the chair group's surveying equipment

Your profile:

  • Completed doctorate degree in a relevant subject area such as archaeology, art history, digital humanities, geomatics, computer science or related fields
  • Proven experience in the field of image-based 3D modelling of cultural heritage
  • Methodological focus in at least two of the following areas:
    • Photogrammetry / Structure from Motion
    • 3D scanning
    • Virtual reality
    • 3D GIS
  • Solid programming skills in Python; initial application skills in data science and deep learning are desirable
  • Interest in teaching and dissemination; experience in academic teaching is desirable
  • Very good written and oral communication skills in English and German and in scientific writing. In the case of limited German language skills, we expect the commitment to achieve level B2 within two years
  • Open-mindedness and the ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary research team and with external researchers, including internationally
  • Flexibility and the ability to work independently and on your own initiative

The required qualifications must be demonstrated in the application documents by means of relevant certificates.
