Climate and Water Research

In this episode of “UniA Research to Go,” President Prof. Dr. Sabine Doering-Manteuffel speaks with climate and water researcher Prof. Dr. Harald Kunstmann. It is a compelling conversation not only about his hydrological research worldwide, but also about responsibility, misinformation, and one of humanity’s greatest global challenges.

The topics of climate protection and adaptation strategies to changing conditions are highly urgent. And there is plenty of misinformation circulating. That is why the passionate scientist also sees himself as an educator, relying on scientific facts communicated in an accessible way. He is now convinced, however, that knowledge alone is not enough to spur the urgently needed action. It also requires solidarity—and the willingness of all countries and all stakeholders to contribute to climate protection.

Public Law and Crisis Resilience

This time, University President Prof. Dr. Sabine Doering-Manteuffel is joined by legal scholar Prof. Sina Fontana. The two discuss the connection between public law and crisis resilience. This includes, for example, how the global community of nations deals with conflicts and why laws are necessary to shape the consequences of climate change. It is also about peaceful coexistence.

Professor Sina Fontana has previously served as an expert witness before the Bundestag committee and discusses whether science can make a difference in politics. And she offers encouragement: You can learn law!

Green Transformation

In the premiere episode, University President Prof. Dr. Sabine Doering-Manteuffel welcomes Prof. Dr. Axel Tuma as a guest. He holds the Chair of Production and Supply Chain Management at the Faculty of Economics, and his research focuses on environmental management, sustainable technologies, the optimization of production and supply chains, as well as the overarching themes of sustainability and climate neutrality.

?

He places particular emphasis on the innovative use of regional resources, such as straw or waste materials like oil from hotel fryers. According to the researcher, this holds enormous potential. He finds that traveling and working in other cultures fosters flashes of inspiration, which is why he also conducts research and teaches in Hawaii. The fact that an English teacher once judged him as someone who was “no longer much use” had the opposite effect.
