St. Bonaventura High School is on its way to becoming a climate school
The school in Dillingen an der Donau held its kick-off event for the Climate School initiative. To mark the start, the Center for Climate Resilience at the University of Augsburg gave a keynote speech on climate change and climate protection. 270 schools in Bavaria have now been certified as climate schools. The program run by the Bavarian State Ministries of Education and Culture and Environment and Consumer Protection can therefore be considered a complete success. Now St. Bonaventura Gymnasium in Dillingen is also preparing to become a climate school. A full program was put together for the kick-off event on December 1, 2025. In the presence of representatives from local politics, the school system of the Diocese of Augsburg, and the parents' association, the students presented their own catalog of measures. The children are very concerned about this issue and are therefore happy and hopeful to actively tackle climate protection. ? ZfK member Dr. Jürgen Orasche from the Institute for Environmental Medicine and Integrative Health represented the ZfK in a keynote speech in which he presented facts about climate change, but also encouraged people to take action. The young people themselves best illustrated how they can take action: they identified eight areas of action for their school: waste, shopping, nutrition, communication, CO2 binding, mobility, electricity, and heating. The school community identified its own mobility as the measure with the highest CO2 savings potential.? Now it is time to implement the measures and obtain certification as a climate school. This means that pupils are now traveling to school more often by bicycle or public transport. Younger pupils are actively supported in this by their older counterparts. ? Depending on the progress made by a school, the “Climate School” seal of approval is awarded in bronze, silver, and gold categories. Schools can work at their own pace and set long-term development goals in the area of education for sustainable development. The aim is to initiate a school development process in a 10-step program in order to systematically anchor climate protection and sustainability in everyday school life. We wish St. Bonaventura Gymnasium every success, perseverance, and persistence on its continued journey to becoming a Climate School.
