Experiments for the Environment (X4E) Workshop held in Augsburg

On March 19 and 20, 2026, the University of Augsburg hosted this year’s Experiments for the Environment (X4E) workshop in the Centre for Climate Resilience. The 50 participants, arriving from universities in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, experienced a diverse scientific program and room for social interaction. Initiated in 2016, X4E is a self-maintaining annual workshop series dedicated to experiments in environmental economics. The aim of the workshop series is to provide a platform, especially for young researchers, to discuss new developments and advance the use of experiments in environmental economics.?
The program included single-session format presentations (topics were agriculture, energy, climate policy, mobility and air pollution, cooperation and coordination, and choices and preferences), interactive poster sessions, and a meet-the-editor panel with four experienced editors of leading environmental and resource economics journals.?
Apart from the scientific program, there was plenty of room for networking during the coffee breaks and the workshop dinner. People new to Augsburg got the chance to explore and learn about the city during a guided city tour. A carefully orchestrated strike of the public transport on Thursday allowed for on-the-spot experimentation with different travel routes to and from the Uni and the joint solution of coordination (everybody taking the same train to town) and cooperation problems (how to distribute the scarce resource of Swabi-bikes)
The workshop was a huge success and will continue next year, hosted by the University of Marburg. The organizing team in Augsburg (Florian Diekert, Martin Kesternich, Thomas Ziesemer, Patrick Hoffmann, Felix Kotulla, and Anna Maier) would like to thank all participants for their input and energy, Claudia Klemencic, Regina Papp, and Jonas Zurl for their valuable assistance, and the Centre for Climate Resilience and the Gesellschaft der Freunde der Hochschulen in Augsburg for the financial support that made hosting the workshop possible.
