5th Network Meeting of Environmental History

? University of Augsburg

Environmental history at the university of Augsburg reaches from the antiquity to the present, from the historical recording of climate change, eating habits and contamination to the ecological economics of the Enlightenment. It is equally regional and global. The Network of Environmental History regularly meets at the Institute of European Cultural History (IEK). If you are interested in the historical exploration of the interrelationship between humans and the rest of nature, you are very welcome.

On Friday, October 31 2025, the 5th network meeting of environmental history will take place from 12 to 2 p.m. in seminar room 201 of the Alte Universit?t (Geb. F1, Eichleitnerstr. 30).

In this context, Dr. L. Sasha Gora, Project leader of the research group "Off the Menu: Appetites, Culture, and Environment",?will give a keynote lecture on the topic "Cod, Cabot, and the History of Salt".

?

On?January 31, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, a special workshop will take place at the 'Brot und Kunst Museum'?in Ulm as part of the current exhibition?Tiny Giants.

The workshop?“Poor Man’s Cheese. Mediterranean Forgotten Histories”?is led by?Penelope Volinia, doctoral researcher in the ENB-research group?Off the Menu: Appetites, Culture, and Environment.

Starting from a brief historical introduction to Kechek el Fouqara, a nearly forgotten fermented dish from the Mediterranean region, the workshop explores fermentation as a method for preserving grains and the central role of microorganisms in this process.

In the hands-on section, participants will make the kechek themselves, shape it, and taste it together.

?

The workshop will be conducted in English.
