“Rights of nature as a bridge between cultures“, speech at the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025, 9.-15. October 2025 in Abu Dhabi, UAE
The IUCN World Conservation Congress
Prof. Kment had the honor to present his research on “Rights of Nature” at the ICUN World Conservation Congress to other international experts. The ICUN is the greatest international stage for debating visions for nature and its preservation over the next 20 years. In his submission, Prof. Kment provided a cultural background to the legal debate on the Rights of Nature.

The protection of human rights in statutory law is common in the Tradition of Common Law and raises several legal inquiries.
In October New Zealand celebrated its 35th. Birthday of the Bill of Rights. The protection of human rights in statutory law is common in the Tradition of Common Law and raises several legal inquiries. Therefore, several international Experts gathered to debate Comparative Law, considering the fundamental values of the “New Zealand Bill of Rights”. Prof. Kment’s presentation included questions about Environmental Law. Hereby, he described the evolution of the ecological enrichment of human rights concerning International and European judgments.
?Response to Urban Development Deficiencies”
The University of Sapienza recently focused on the rehabilitation of peripheral areas. Therefore, new policy instruments are about to be developed in order to enhance laggard regions at the outskirts. The Project is funded by the European Union and hereby creates the possibility to invite several experts from all over Europe to debate the topic. Under these circumstances, Professor Kment represented the Federal Republic of Germany and contributed an overview of judicial tools in Germany regarding urban redevelopment. These tools support the local districts to intervene in case of decreasing work or living conditions or security matters.

Future Transmission Labs
From June 10-13, 2024, Amprion invited ten doctoral candidates from various research fields to Dortmund as part of the Future Transmission Lab. For four days, the participants had the opportunity to engage in intensive discussions and exchange ideas with a strong practical focus. Prof. Dr. Martin Kment, a member of the Future Transmission Lab's Scientific Advisory Board, sent Mr. Torben Buck and Ms. Anna Weininger.
Augsburg-Johannesburg Conference Meeting
The University of Johannesburg invited its colleagues from Augsburg to debate the topic: ?On the Fourth Industrial Revolution – Legal Perspectives from Germany and South Africa.” Professor Kment thereby contributed insights on recent developments of the Taxonomy-Regulation and the tension between classifying nuclear energy as sustainable. Furthermore, Ms. Weininger presented the acceleration of environmental impact assessments by the concepts of Industry 4.0.
Appointment of Prof. Martin Kment as a member of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL)
Professor Martin Kment was appointed to the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL) in January 2023 for the 2021-2025 term. Founded in 1948, the IUCN has since become the world's largest network dedicated to environmental protection. The network includes governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as associations of indigenous peoples from over 160 countries. It also unites more than 15,000 experts from all over the world to work towards environmental protection.
