Following the "University of Augsburg Award for Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies" (1986–2009),? with a total of 16 international award winners, including the geographer Herbert Wilhelmy (1986), the historian Raymond Carr (1990), the literary scholar Hans-J?rg Neusch?fer (1993), the publisher Klaus Dieter Vervuert (1998), the political scientist Dieter Nohlen (2000), and the linguist Hiroto Ueda (2009); and to mark the 40th anniversary of the ISLA Institute and the Albert Leimer Foundation, based in Augsburg, both institutions have established the “ISLA Award of the Albert Leimer Foundation” in 2026.

The award, with a prize money of 5.000 EUR, is given for outstanding achievements in Iberian? and Latin American research, knowledge, and cultural dissemination, and the promotion of Ibero-Romance issues, particularly studies on Ibero-America, as well as related work in translation, art, and culture (including civic engagement).
