Constellations tells the love story of Marianne, a quantum physicist, and Roland, a beekeeper. What initially appears to be a conventional relationship drama unfolds under the influence of Marianne’s field of research into an experience that is as original as it is moving. Drawing on the theory of a multiverse in which every decision generates new parallel worlds, Nick Payne develops an extraordinary dramaturgical structure: scenes repeat, jump back, and vary, revealing alternative possibilities of the same moment.
Marianne and Roland thus encounter each other again and again. In one version, sparks fly instantly; in another, they can barely stand each other. Only after numerous wrong turns, missed opportunities, and failed beginnings does that one constellation seem to emerge which sustains their shared story. It is precisely this multitude of possible lives that gives their relationship its originality and, paradoxically, makes it appear all the more unique.
Against the backdrop of this structure, at once playful and precise, Constellations raises profound philosophical questions: Is there free will if everything could always unfold differently? What value do our decisions hold in an infinite multiverse? And where does human dignity reside when our actions are simultaneously meaningful and seemingly insignificant? In the existential choice that Marianne and Roland ultimately face, these questions crystallize into a deeply human moment of responsibility, love, and courage.
Born in 1984, Nick Payne is one of the most important contemporary British playwrights. Constellations premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 2012 and was later staged in both the West End and on Broadway. The play received numerous awards and nominations, including the Laurence Olivier Award and the Tony Award. Payne’s work is known for its formal innovation, emotional clarity, and its fusion of scientific concepts with deeply personal stories.
With Constellations, the AnglistenTheater continues its tradition of presenting contemporary, challenging theatre that engages audiences emotionally and intellectually alike: an evening about love and chance, decisions and possibilities.
Performances
The AnglistenTheater production of?Constellations?premiered at the Sensemble Theater?on February 3rd, 2026, followed by two more performances on February 4th and 5th. In April, the production moved to the theter?stage in the Augsburg City Club for 3 more performances on April 17th, 23rd and 24th.

Die Inszenierung??Constellations??des?Anglistentheaters?ist ein humorvoller Querschnitt unseres Alltag und hinterl?sst das Publikum nachdenklich und emotional?
Am?23. April 2026?fand die zweite von drei Aufführungen von?Nick Paynes??Constellations??im?City Club?statt. Das?Anglistentheater?stellte zum wiederholten Mal sein künstlerisches Talent und Gespür für relevante Themen unter Beweis. Mit einer ausverkauften Dernière schlie?t das Ensemble dieses Projekt mit gro?em Erfolg ab.
Im vollen Publikumsraum ging bereits ab den ersten Minuten ein Lachen durch die Reihen, denn von Beginn an fingen die Schauspielenden?Signe Sturup-Hackenberg (Marianne)?und?Jake Cregan (Roland)?die Aufmerksamkeit der Zuschauer*innen mit ihrer glaubwürdigen Performance ein. Die Anstrengung eines Zwei-Personen-Stücks über 75 Minuten war den Schauspieler*innen jedoch nicht anzumerken: Voller Elan und Nuancen konfrontierten sie das Publikum durch die Aufführung hinweg mit der Frage: Inwiefern beeinflusst eine Entscheidung den Verlauf meines Lebens? Dabei wiederholten sie mehrere Szenen in verschiedenen Variationen, Tonlagen und Perspektivwechseln und nahmen die Zuschauenden mit auf eine Achterbahn der Gefühle.
Unter der gro?artigen Regie von?Lotte Lange?und der erfahrenen Inspizienz?von?Viktoria Rossi?gelang dem Ensemble, die Menschlichkeit der Figuren nachempfindbar darzustellen und die existenzielle Frage nach dem Sinn des Lebens, nach Selbstbestimmung und Schicksal auf verschiedenen Ebenen zu beleuchten. Das Bühnenbild schien auf den ersten Blick recht simpel – ein schlichtes Wohnzimmer, welches das Publikum allerdings ohne Barriere in das Geschehen hineinzog. Der Einsatz von Projektionen und Sound schaffte eine parallele Sph?re, die neben dem Ausprobieren unterschiedlicher ?Was w?re, wenn?-Szenarien lief.?
Eine beeindruckende Inszenierung und ein Abend voller Emotionen, der die Grenzen zwischen Leben(digkeit) und Tod fulminant beschritt. Wenn diese Produktion etwas beweist, dann, dass es sich mehr als lohnt, auch zukünftige Inszenierungen des?Anglistentheaters?auf dem Radar zu haben und einem eingespielten Team bei ihrer leidenschaftlichen Arbeit zuzusehen.
